(with Parents) 1841 CensusJohn appeared on the 1841 Census of Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon in the household of his parents. He was 35 years old and was born in Devon. His father was a Farmer.5 
(with Parents) 1851 CensusJohn appeared on the 1851 Census of Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon with his parents. He was 45, unmarried, a Miller Journeyman, and born in Cheriton Fitzpaine.1 
1861 CensusJohn Channing appeared on the 1861 Census of Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon, at Thongsleigh Mill. He was 54, married [sic], a Miller and Farmer, birthplace Cheriton Fitzpaine. With him were his sister Mary A Heywood (widow, 45, housekeeper), nephew John Heywood (9), niece Catherine M Heywood (7), niece Elizabeth Channing (22, Dairymaid), and two servants (carters).6 
MarriageHe married Ann Hosegood on 10 Oct 1861 in Wesleyan Chapel, Tiverton, Devon.7
 
Newspaper Published 23 Oct 1861 in the Trewman's Exeter Flying Post or Plymouth and Cornish Advertiser. Marriages. October 10, at the Wesleyan Chapel, Tiverton, Mr. John Channing, Thongsley Mill, Cheriton Fitzpaine, to Miss Hosegood, of Tiverton.7 
1871 CensusJohn and Ann Channing appeared on the 1871 Census of Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon, at Thongsleigh Mill and Farm. John was 64, a Miller and Farmer of 30 acres, and was born in Cheriton Fitzpaine. Ann was 60 and born in Tiverton. With them was Elizabeth Channing (relationship not recorded, 33, born Thorverton), and three servants - 2 indoor farm servants and one general domestic servant.8 
Research Note John is unmarried at the 1851 census, married in 1861 but wife not home; this is likely the right John (with wife) in 1881 because birthdate, place, and occup are right.9 
1881 CensusJohn and Annie Channing appeared on the 1881 Census of Tiverton, Devon, at Saint Andrew St (Flour Mill). John was 74, a Miller Foreman, born Cheriton Fitzpaine. Annie was 70, born Tiverton. No one else was in the household.10 
DeathJohn died in 1888.11
