Anecdote

Auntie Rita became a maid at Number 11 Downing Street (the Chancellor of the
Exchequer's official residence). Here she met a diplomat who she married and
went with him to India. He died and she returned to this country where she
was offered a Grace and Favour House. However, she turned it down and went to live in the United States.
There she married a Fred Vote - who was an ex-F.B.I. man. The story is that
he had one running board gun battle with gangsters around about the time of
prohibition. They lived in Los Angeles for many years. When Fred died she
came back to England and lived with her sister Bertha until her death.⁵

She was 30 years 5 months old, a widow, occupation wife, residence Hastings, England, and a non-immigrant. Her contact in England was friend Mr Harry? Edwards of 116 Braybrooke Road, Hastings. Her final destination was to friends Mr and Mrs Ed Gower, 115 E Beach in Biloxi Mississippi but she did not yet have a ticket. Margreta paid her own way, had $330, had been in the US before (at Woreham [sic] for 6 months), was born in London England, and was described as 5' tall, sallow complexion, brown hair and brown eyes. There is a note, "Dis to T.A. Society" [discharged to Traveler's Aid Society - they would help her find her way].⁸

Margreta Hore was listed on a manifest dated 29 Apr 1920 for the SS Finland, leaving Southampton for New York. She was 34, a widow, housewife, last permanent residence Hastings, England, final destination Roselle Park, New Jersey. Her contact in England was Mrs Elliott, 116 Braybrooke Road, Hastings [Sussex]. Margreta paid her own way, had $50, had previously been in New Orleans for 2 1/2 years to March 1919, going to meet intended husband Mr F Vote, 31 Westfield Avenue, Roselle Park, New Jersey. Intends to reside permanently in the U.S. Description 5' tall, sallow complexion, brown hair and eyes and was born in London England.¹⁰

Margreta Vote was issued a United States passport on 3 Dec 1920. On the application it noted the following: maiden name Kolthammer, born 13 March 1886 in London England, residence Los Angeles, housewife, and her husband was Fredrick Vote who was born in Chicago Illinois and whose name was legally changed from Vogt to Vote. The passport was to go abroad temporarily to the British Isles to settle an estate in her family and visit relatives. She was described as age 34, 5'1" tall, medium forehead, brown eyes, straight nose, straight mouth, round chin, brown hair, fair complexion, oval face, and no distinguishing marks. [The application had a $1 fee and included a photograph]¹³

She was traveling 1st class, occupation Wife, age 34, and was an American citizen. There was a check mark under 'England' for country of intended future residence.¹⁴

Margreta was 44, first married at 24, born in England, father born in France, mother in Germany, immigrated in 1913. They owned their home worth $10,000 [this was medium high for the area] and had a radio set.¹⁶

Frederick's death on 13 Oct 1968 left Rita a widow.²⁰

Rita lived in Los Angeles for most of her married life and came to live with Billy and her sister Bertha on her return to England. She had no children.²¹

William and family returned from England in September 1894 on the SS Paris, and according to the immigration records, they were already US citizens. In 1895, they returned from Queenstown, Ireland on the RMS Majestic. My guess is that they took trips back to England and Ireland to let their kids meet their grandparents, aunts and uncles.⁶

William and Margret Whitby appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, at 628 Baltic Street. They had been married 14 years and had 4 children, all still living. They owned their house with a mortgage. William was 37, born March 1863 in England, immigrated in 1885, naturalized, occupation Engraver. Margret was 37, born Oct 1863 in Ireland, parents born in Scotland, immigrated in 1881. Their children were George A (13), William F (11), Violet (9), and Gladys (1.)²

William died on 3 Jul 1903 in New York.

The person recording this manifest did not follow the column headings so it's a bit difficult to figure out the information. "Chicago" is written on George's entry but no indication of what it means.⁵

George H Fox, Selkirk, Dies

George H Fox, well known in Selkirk and district, died suddenly Monday at his home, at 71. He was born in Sheffield in 1878.

Mr Fox came to Canada when 21, proceeding to Winnipeg in 1894 and proceeding to Brandon. He returned to Winnipeg and later moved to Selkirk. He was employed in the lumber yards for some time and later opened a butcher business in Selkirk. He served on the town council in early years but of late years had charge of the town market from which post he retired about two years ago.

Mr Fox was also well known for his contributions to The Selkirk Record as writer of the Weekly Selkirk Sidelights column for the last nine years.

Mr Fox is survived by a sister, Mrs C Carlin, Moose Jaw, and a brother also survives.

Langrille's funeral home, Selkirk, is in charge of funeral arrangements.¹³

The death occurred at her home Wednesday of Mrs Florence Fox, 60, 2264 Pasqua street. Born in Lincolnshire, Eng., she moved to Fairlight, Sask., 29 years ago. Twelve years later she moved to Osage and five years ago she moved to Disley. She had lived in Regina for the past two years. Surviving are her husband, Richard Fox; a son, Frank, of Disley, and three daughters, Mrs Burlock, of Disley; Mrs Arthur Wilkie, Regina, and Violet, Regina. Funeral service will be held at the Co-operative Funeral chapel Friday at 3 o'clock, Canon E Lee officiating. Burial will be in the family plot, Regina cemetery.¹²

Richard S Fox passes

A farmer in the province for 41 years, Richard Stamp Fox, 78, of 4737 Eighth avenue, died Saturday in a Regina hospital.

Rev R Fox will conduct the funeral service at 3 pm Wednesday at Bremners funeral chapel, and burial will be in the family plot, Regina cemetery.

A native of Lincolnshire, England, Mr Fox emigrated to Canada in 1913, and for a year worked with a telephone construction firm at Selkirk, Man., before moving to Fairlight where he operated his first farm until 1926.
For the next 12 years Mr Fox farmed at Osage, then moved to Disley, retiring from the land in 1947, when he came to live with his daughter, Mrs Florence Burlock, in Regina.
Mr Fox's main interests were local and national politics, and until a few years ago he was active in provincial curling circles.

Predeceased by his wife in 1943, Mr Fox is survived by a son, Frank, of Lumsden; three daughters, Mrs F Burlock, 4737 Eighth avenue, Mrs A D Wilkie, 2275 Retallack street, and Mrs C Bell of Keystown, and nine grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Robert of Kitscoty, Alta., and Frank, of Grimsby, England.¹⁴

Their 7-year old daughter Nancy (Isabella Annie) had to remain in England when health inspectors found a problem [likely ringworm, although some family stories say chickenpox] and she sailed in August, accompanied by the Frost family from Northumberland. The travellers landed in Quebec, took the Coronation train to Calgary, stayed at the CPR hotel, then took a train to Red Deer which took them as far as Sedgewick as there was no station in Lougheed yet. James & Emily met the train in the evening.¹²

PASSES AWAY AT LOUGHEED
_______

The death of Mrs Kinross, wife of James Stirling Kinross took place on Sunday morning, June 5th, after an illness of several weeks. Although she was not of a robust nature, yet we felt that Mrs Kinross would gain strength with the warm days, so the sad news came as a surprise to many who had hoped for her recovery.

The deceased lady was held in great esteem in this community where she had resided with her family since 1911, having previously lived in Leamarston, Birmingham, England. The funeral service was particularly impressive and was conducted by the Anglican Church minister the Rev Mr Boustead. Mrs T Heath of Green Valley presided at the organ and rendered appropriate music in a most sympathetic manner. "Nearer my God to Thee" and "On the Resurrection Morning" were sung by the congregation. Friends from near and far were present to pay their last respects to the one they loved.

The pallbearers as follows were old friends and neighbors: Messrs T Heath, C Ball, C Wells, W Hallum, R Broadfoot, F Broadfoot.

The casket was covered with very beautiful fragrant blooms from relatives, friends and various organizations in which she had been an active member. Particular mention might be made of Mrs Kinross' activity in Red Cross circles during the war. Her beautiful needlework and dainty hand made articles donated to the various calls for raising funds for war purposes, will long be remembered by those who had the privilege of seeing them. They were the cynosure of admiring eyes and her donations seemed endless. Although of a quiet, retiring disposition, yet Mrs Kinross was a member of the Fairdonian UFWA and a director of the Sedgewick-Lougheed Agricultural Society, in both of which she was an untiring and faithful worker having acted as Secretary for several years to the UFWA local.

The remains were reverently laid to rest in the Lougheed cemetery on Tuesday, June 7th, before a large gathering of relatives and friends. Besides her husband, James Stirling Kinross, she leaves to mourn her loss, her only son Cecil, the Canadian Victoria Cross hero, and two daughters, Mrs Dr G A E Kelman, of Lougheed and Nancy who has been attending High School in Edmonton. The parents of the deceased lady both reside in Hurley, Birmingham, England.

Much sympathy goes out to the sorrowing relatives in their sad bereavement.¹⁸

Their children were Jessie Harriet (33, special school teacher) and Ellen Beatrice (31, teacher of domestic science). There was also a general servant. Their home had 9 rooms.⁴

Anecdote

Granddaughter Joan Haworth recounted the following story:

Margarete went to Germany on holiday just before the war and wasn't allowed back into England once it began. She worked in hospitals all through the war and sent postcards to her children back in England. During the war, shopkeepers and the coalman wouldn't serve them because of their German name and the girls were stoned by mobs.⁵

The London Gazette listed the names of the former alien enemies returning to England, per the Aliens Restriction Act, 1919. Included in the list published in February 1920 from the Home Office at Whitehall was Margarete Kolthammer.²⁴

She was 58 years and 10 months old, widowed, born in Wurtenburg Germany, German, and a resident of England. She was employed in general kitchen work at the Martin Dining Rooms in 5 Gt Dover Street, London SE.
Lily was 21 years and 8 months old, single, born in Southwark. She was a housemaid at The Bull Inn in Theydon Essex.

Wynne Goss recollected:

I knew Granny well and loved her enormously. She lived in Coldharbour Lane, Brixton in one room in her later years. My Mum, sister and self used to go every Saturday to collect her dirty laundry and take it to clean for her. Also to do her shopping. We used to go on holiday with her to Ramsgate Kent. She was a lovely cuddly Granny and I loved her deeply and miss her even now.²⁷

The only son of Johann Rudolph with the name Wilhelm is Christopher Wilhelm, for whom there are no records in the Schneverdingen register after his baptism. It is possible that I missed seeing Johann Wilhelm's baptism when reading the register microfilm but the children are evenly spaced beginning right after his parents' marriage and continuing until Anna was 46 years old.

Justification for this being the correct marriage for John: the timing fits; Market Bosworth is a market town; Kirby Bellars is near Twyford; there are no children to this couple baptised in Kirby Bellars; the Kirby Bellars' John's father William married Philadelphia Hardy in 1795 and Twyford/Sheepy John named a daughter Philadelphia in 1800.

Research Note

After their son William's baptism in 1804, there is no evidence of any of this family in Twyford.

I John Stafford of Sheepy Parva in the County of Leicester Farmer do hereby revoke all former Wills and other Testamentary Dispositions by me at any time heretofore made and declare this only to be my last Will and Testament

And first I appoint my Sons Thomas Stafford and William Stafford joint Executors of this my Will and direct that all my just debts funeral and testamentary expences may be paid by them as soon as conveniently may be after my decease.

I give and bequeath unto my said Executors all my household goods and furniture farming stock implements of husbandry and all other my personal Estate and Effects of what nature or kind soever the same may be upon trust that they my said Executors do and shall sell dispose of and convert the same into money by Public Auction or private Contract as to my said Executors shall seem fitting and proper And I do hereby direct that my said Executors shall (after payment of all my just debts funeral and testamentary expences as before directed) place out and invest the residue of the said monies in the Parliamentary Stocks or public funds of Great Britain or at Interest on Government or real Securities in England and from time to time vary alter and transfer the hereinbefore mentioned Trust monies stocks funds and securities for or into other Stocks Funds or Securities of the like nature when and so often as they shall think fit Provided always and I do hereby declare that

in case my Son John Stafford shall wish to succeed me in the occupation of the Farm which I now occupy and shall make known such wish to my executors within fourteen days after my decease then and in such case I do hereby direct my said Executors to allow him so to do and to give him every assistance in their power to get him accepted tenant thereof And if my said Son John shall so wish I do hereby declare that he shall be at liberty to take all or any part of my said Household goods and furniture farming Stock and implements of husbandry as he may choose which together with the tillages crops and other tenant rights shall be taken to by my said Son John at a fair valuation to be made by two indifferent persons one of them to be chosen by my said Son John and the other by my said Executors And in case such two persons cannot agree upon the sums and amount of such valuation the same shall be made by a third person whom the said two Arbitrators shall appoint as umpire for that purpose before they begin to act And in case my said Son John shall not be prepared to pay the amount of such valuation I do hereby declare that it shall and may be lawful for my said Executors with the consent of my said wife to accept and take such personal or other Security from my said Son John for the whole or any part of the amount of such valuation as they my said Executors shall judge proper and to allow the same or any part thereof to remain on such Security during the life of my said wife if they my said Executors and my said wife shall so choose but not otherwise he my said Son John paying interest thereon in the mean time after such rate as my said wife shall direct And I do hereby declare that my said Executors shall stand and be possessed of and interested in the said trust monies stocks funds and securities and the Interest dividends and annual produce thereof respectively upon trust to pay the Interest dividends and annual proceeds of the said Monies stocks funds and securities to my dear wife for and during the term of her natural life

And subject thereto and to the trusts aforesaid all the said trust monies stocks funds and securities shall be In trust for and be divided between and amongst all and every or such one or more of my seven Children Elizabeth, Thomas, Margaret, Mary, Philadelphia, John and William as shall be living at the time of my decease and the lawful issue of such of them as shall be then dead equally share and share alike but such Issue to take only the share or shares but both original and accruing to which his her or their parent or Parents respectively would have been entitled if living and their respective exe-utors administrators and assigns

Mary was 67 and born in Sheepy Leicestershire. They had been married 45 years, had 6 living children and none who had died. With them were a female help (28, single) and a farm hand (64, casual).¹¹

I William Stafford of the Parish of Ratcliffe Culey in the county of Leicester, Farmer, do hereby make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in Form and manner following namely;

I give and bequeath unto my dear Wife Elizabeth and to my son Joseph, the whole of my property that I may die possessed of during the term of their natural lives and I further will and direct that my Executors hereinafter named in Three Months after my decease shall convert or cause to be converted into money the whole of my Property whatsoever and wheresoever, such monies to be placed out at interest in such a manner as they may think best; such interest to be for the maintenance of my dear Wife Elizabeth and my Son Joseph during their lives and in case the Interest of such monies be insufficient for their comforts then it shall be lawful for my Executors to take from the principal so much as shall be necessary for their comfort, and support, as they may from time to time require (Unless my son William should wish to hold the Farm, if so he shall have the power to take to everything I die possessed of either by Public Auction or by Valuation and in case he declines then my son Thomas shall be allowed the same privilege) and I further will and direct that my Executors shall pay all my just Debts, Funeral Expenses (which I hope and trust they will be very economical with) the costs and charges of executing this my last Will, and they shall not be accountable for any loss or losses they may sustain unless the same be occasioned by their wilful default or neglect nor shall one of them be accountable for the act of the other but each for his own act and deed only and they shall deduct to themselves all reasonable charges and expenses as they shall be put to in executing the trust hereby reposed in them.

Further, at the decease of my dear Wife Elizabeth and my son Joseph, the whole of my remaining Property shall then be equally divided amongst my Children viz Margaret, the wife of George Whitby, Elizabeth the wife of George Whitehead, Sarah the Wife of Samuel Stevenson, Mary the wife of John Hull , John, William, Thomas and Richard and in case any of them die without issue the whole of their share or shares to be equally divided amongst the remaining Brothers or Sisters or their issue.

Lastly I hereby nominate and appoint my Three Sons, viz: William, Thomas and Richard executors of this my last and only Will and Testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my Name this Thirty first day of December in the year of our Lord One thousand Eight Hundred and Sixty six.
William Stafford

Signed by the said William Stafford the Testator in the presence of us both present at the same time who in his presence have subscribed our names as Witnesses - John Eaton, William Smith.¹¹

Voters' List

DEATHS. On the 23rd inst., at Ratcliffe Culey, after a lingering illness, William Stafford, aged 75 years.¹⁷

Probate

His estate was proved at Leicester on the 3rd day of November 1879 by the Oath of Richard Stafford the Son, one of the Executors to whom Administration was granted. Power reserved of making the like Grant to William Stafford and Thomas Stafford the Sons also the other Executors. The Testator William Stafford was late of Ratcliffe Culey in the County of Leicester Farmer and died on the 23rd day of June 1879 at Ratcliffe Culey aforesaid.
Value of estate was under £300.¹¹

ROMANCE AT RATCLIFFE CULEY

The wedding took place at the Nuneaton Catholic Church on Wednesday of Mr Tom Bradbury, who is aged 73 years, and resides at Sutton Cheney, and Mrs Mary Hatwell, who is 72 years of age, of 42 Stanley Road, Nuneaton. The bride was given away by Larry Gains, the famous boxer, and Mr Jim Wardle, licensee of the Dixie Arms Hotel, Market Bosworth, was best man.
Miss Margaret Stafford, of Warrington, the bride's sister, acted as bridesmaid. The ceremony was performed by Father Hogan. The church path was lined with scores of middle-aged matrons and young girls as the blushing bride, on the arm of Larry Gains, arrived at the church porch. There was a burst of cheering as the happy couple was sighted, and a burst of hand-clapping as the smiling Gains made his made [sic] through the excited throng.
Mrs Hatwell wore an ankle-length dress of fawn crepe-de-chine. She carried a large bouquet of pink carnations. When the bride and bridegroom left the church they were mobbed on all sides, and showered with confetti. Mr Bradbury wore a "top hat" and morning dress, and looked spruce and smiling. After the wedding, the couple went to Sutton Cheney for the wedding reception, numerous guests attending.
Behind this wedding lies a romance which is intimately connected with Ratcliffe Culey, for it was there where the couple first met forty years ago. Mrs Hatwell, who was the eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs John Stafford, of Ratcliffe Culey was the landlady of the Gate Inn, Ratcliffe Culey, the licence being granted to her husband exactly forty years ago last week. They were at the Gate Inn for 35 years and for a period Mr Bradbury lodged there. He was a contractor.
For over thrity years they lost sight of each other. Mr Bradbury went to live at Sutton Cheney, was married and had 9 children, 48 grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. For nine years he held the licence of the Greyhound Inn, Sutton Cheney, and his fine collection of antiques were recently sold by auction. He is a familiar figure at all the meets of the North Atherstone Hounds in his donkey and cart, and last year he chose this method of transport to go on a holiday to Yarmouth and back. Mrs Hatwell moved to Nuneaton at the death of her husband where she lives with her son, a second son being in New Zealand.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Mrs Hatwell told a press representative how they met again last Whitsuntide, had a dance togehter, and later decided to get married.
"My son said to me 'Would you like to walk down the town?' and when I declined, he persuaded me to go for a ride. I did not know where we were going, but eventually we arrived at the Greyhound Inn at Sutton, and I saw Mr Bradbury, whom I had not seen for nearly forty years. He told me that he had lost his wife."
After further conversation Mrs Hatwell and her son were getting ready go, but it was decided to have a little dance. Following the dance, Mr Bradbury came over to her and said, "Will you be my wife?"

Mrs Hatwell is connected with the Stafford family, at Atherstone. Mr O C Vero and Mr W D Stafford, Atherstone hat manufacturers and magistrates, are relations. She worked at the hat factory of her uncle's, Messrs. Wilson and Stafford's, Atherstone, from the age of 13 to 27. The late Mr Stafford and her father and brothers, and Mr W D Stafford and Mrs O C Vero, are cousins.¹⁰

Walter E appeared on the 1881 Census of Ratcliffe Culey, Leicestershire with his parents. He was 12 years old, a Scholar, and born in Ratcliffe Culey.⁴

Marriage Bann

Marriage banns were published in Ratcliffe Culey June 5, 12, and 19th for Walter Edward Stafford, bachelor, of this parish, and Ellen Gilbert, spinster, of the parish of Cubbington, Warwickshire. A marginal notation said "Certificate be issued June 20th."⁵

1911 Census

Walter Edward and Ellen Stafford appeared on the 1911 Census of Ratcliffe Culey, Leicestershire. They had been married 12 years and had 3 children, all living. Walter Edward was 42, a hatter (presser in Felt Hat Manufactory), born in Ratcliffe Culey. Ellen was 40, born in Cubbington. Their children were Jack (12), Edward Gilbert (9), and Thomas Wm (7), all attending school.⁶

His wife Ellen died in 1939.⁷

[Mary was the daughter of Thomas' brother William]. There were also one house servant and two farm servants.²

Thomas died on 25 Jun 1857.⁵

1861 Census

Henry and Margaret Cart appeared on the 1861 Census of Syston, Leicestershire, at High Street. Henry was 65, a Framework Knitter, Barber, & Local Methodist Preche [sic], born in Syston. Margaret was 64 and born in Thorpe Satchville. With them was Henry's brother William (61, single, frame knitter).⁶

Death

Margaret died in 1861.⁷

Her husband's estate was proved on 14 Dec 1872. Entry from the probate calendar:
