(Witness) Marriage John Oliver witnessed the marriage of his brother Thomas Oliver and Ann Hookway on 27 Sep 1880 in Exeter, Devon.6 
1881 CensusJohn Oliver appeared on the 1881 Census of Seaton, Devon, as a boarder at the King's Arms Inn. He was 26, unmarried, occupation H M Seaman, and born in Cheriton Fitzpaine.7 
MarriageHe married Elizabeth Ann Lake on 8 Nov 1881 in Cheriton Fitzpaine.

Elizabeth was 33 and they were both born in Cheriton Fitzpaine. Their children were John H (8), Ernest B (4), William A (2), and Edward P (1). Also there were cousin Amelia Mildon (40, single), niece Alice C West (16) and nephew Fred West (15). [Amelia was related to John's mother Mary Burnett and the Wests were related to Elizabeth Ann Lake]10 
1901 CensusJohn and Elizabeth A Oliver appeared on the 1901 Census of St Thomas Exeter, Devon, at 69 Regent Street. John was 45, a carpenter & joiner, worker, born in Cheriton Fitzpaine. Elizabeth was 43, born Cheriton Fitzpaine. Their children were John H (18, florist & market gardener), Ernest B (14), William A (12), Edward P (11), Rose M (9), Alice M (7), and Leonard T (6). Also there were cousin Amelia Mildon (51, crippled from childhood) and nephew Fred West (24.)11 
1911 CensusJohn and Elizabeth Ann appeared on the 1911 Census of Exeter, Devon, at 69 Regent Street. Their dwelling had 4 rooms. John was 55, a Carpenter & Joiner, and born in Cheriton Fitzpaine Devon. Elizabeth Ann was 53, born in Cheriton Fitzpaine, and was the mother of 9 children, 7 of whom were still living. They had been married 29 years. Their children at home were Edward Percival (21, plumber), Alice Mabel (17), Leonard Thomas (16, porter). Also there were their daughter-in-law Ada Ethel Elizabeth and her son John Walter Thomas (1.)12 
Passenger List The Oliver family came to Canada on 6 separate ships! The earliest and latest ones are into Halifax because the St Lawrence into Quebec would have been frozen.

John and Annie, along with their daughters Alice and Rose, sailed from Avonmouth on the Royal George, arriving in Quebec on the 19th of July. They carried $35 cash and were going to join their son, a gardener, in Brantford. Rose, 19, was a cook and Church of England. Alice, 18, was a nurse, and Wesleyan. John was a farmer and he and Annie were Church of England. They traveled by Canadian Northern Railway.13

DeathJohn died on 12 Jan 1919 in 49 Mount Pleasant Street, Brantford, Brant County, Ontario.
Details from registration: age 63, born in England, carpenter, widowed, parents names not recorded. The informant was the funeral home and he was buried in Farringdon Cemetery. Cause of death was carious ribs of four months duration.16
