BaptismHe was baptized on 1 Mar 1818 in New Road Tonbridge Congregational or Independent, St Pancras, Middlesex. Herbert s/o Herbert & Elizabeth Godart of 34 Everham Buildings.1 
MarriageHe married Mary Reed on 9 Dec 1838 in All Souls, Saint Marylebone, London.
Information from the certificate: Herbert Godart: 21, Bachelor, Carver, father Herbert Godart, Carver;
Mary Reed: 24, Spinster, father Samuel Reed, Shoe Maker;
Their residences were both All Souls District and they were married in All Souls Church in St Marylebone parish. Witnesses were Samuel Reed & Jane Reed.3 
1841 CensusHerbert and Mary Godart appeared on the 1841 Census of Marylebone, Middlesex, at Union Street. Herbert was 20, a Carver, Mary was 20 and they were both born in this county. With them was their daughter Mary (1). At the same address was Samuel Reed (64, shoemaker). Note that the 1841 census records ages rounded down to the nearest 5 years, does not record relationships, and only indicates whether or not the person was born in the county.4 
1851 CensusHerbert and Mary Goddart [sic] appeared on the 1851 Census of St Pancras, Middlesex, at 44 London Street. There were 4 households at this address. Herbert was 33, an Ornamental Wood Carver, and was born in St Pancras. Mary was 37 and born in St Pancras. Their children were Mary (10), Herbert (9), and Martha (3). Also there were Herbert's father-in-law Samuel Reid and niece Charlotte Reid.2 
Research Note Herbert was not with his wife Mary & family in the 1871, 81 or 91 census but Mary is listed as married and Herbert was with Isabella and a second family. Neither Herbert nor Mary has been found in the 1861 census. 
MarriageHerbert Godart married Isabella Ann Taylor.
Note: Herbert and Isabella's marriage record has not yet been found. They probably did not marry as Herbert's wife Mary was still living.5

Herbert Godart, formerly of No. 44, London-street, Fitzroy-square, Middlesex, then of Woodville-cottage, Belgrove, East Wickham, in the county of Kent, and now of No. 16, Acorn-terrace, Greenwich, in the said county of Kent, having a Workshop at No. 7, Cleveland-street, Fitzroy-square, in the county of Middlesex, Carver and Gilder and Picture Frame Maker, having been adjudged bankrupt under a Petition for adjudication of Bankruptcy, filed in Her Majesty's Court of Bankruptcy, in London, on the 10th day of November, 1863, is hereby required to surrender himself to William Hazlitt, Esq., a Registrar of the said Court, at the first meeting of creditors to be held before the said Registrar, on the 30th day of November instant, at two o'clock in the afternoon precisely, at the said Court. Mr. Hatton Hamer Stansfeld, of No. 1A, Basinghall-street, London, is the Official Assignee, and Messrs. Marshall and Son, of No. 12, Hatton-garden, London, are the Solicitors acting inthe bankruptcy.6

Herbert Godart, formerly of No. 44, London-street, Fitzroy-square, Middlesex, then of Woodville-cottage, Belgrove, East Wickham, in the county of Kent, and now of No. 16, Acorn-terrace, Greenwich, in the said county of Kent, having a workshop at No.7, Cleveland-street, Fitzroy-square, in the county of Middlesex, Carver and Gilder and Picture Frame Maker, having been adjudged bankrupt under a Petition for adjudication of Bankruptcy, filed in Her Majesty's Court of Bankruptcy, in London, on the 10th day of November, 1863, a public sitting, for the said bankrupt to pass his Last Examination,and make application for his Discharge, will be held before John Samuel Martin Fonblanque, Esq., a Commissioner of the said Court, on the 8th day of January next, at the said Court, at Basinghall-street, in the city of London, at twelve of the clock at noon precisely, the day last aforesaid being the daylimited for the said bankrupt to surrender. Mr. Hatton Hamer Stansfeld, of No. 1A, Basinghall-street, London, is the Official Assignee, and Mr. W.W. Aldridge, of No. 46, Moorgate-street,London, is the Solicitor acting in the bankruptcy.7
 
1871 CensusHerbert and Isabella appeared on the 1871 Census of Acton, Middlesex, at 7 Osborn Rd. Herbert was 50, a Carver Master, and was born in Middlesex, London. Isabella was 33 and born in Middlesex, London. The children were Herbert (9), Samuel (5), James (3), and Charles (8 months.)8 
Note.Herbert's sons Herbert, Samuel, and Charles were born in 1862, 66, and 70 but were all baptised together in 1872.9 
1881 CensusHerbert and Isabella appeared on the 1881 Census of Acton, Middlesex, at 190 Osborne Rd. Herbert was 60, a Wood Carver, and was born in St Pancras, Middlesex. Isabella was 45 and born in Westminster. Their children were James (13), Charles (11), and Peter (5.)5 
Note.Herbert's youngest son was born in 1875 but not baptised until 1884.10 
1891 CensusHerbert and Ann appeared on the 1891 Census of Acton, Middlesex, at 111 Osborne Rd. They live in four rooms. Herbert was 73, a Wood Carver, neither employer nor employee, and was born in St Pancras, London. Ann was 62, a Laundress and born in Lambeth. No one else was in the household.11 
DeathHerbert died in Sep 1893.12
 
BurialHe was buried on 19 Sep 1893 in Acton, Middlesex. The register noted that he was 70 years old, abode South Acton.12
