Overview | * * * * * James Kennedy had a short life. He was born in Pennsylvania about 1828 and married Rebecca Morrison. They had five known children when James enlisted to serve in the Civil War. He mustered out, came home, and they had one more daughter. James again went to war with the Pennsylvania 100th regiment, the "Roundheads", and died in the Andersonville Prison (Camp Sumter) in Georgia. The site was open for 14 months and over 45,000 Union soldiers were confined at the prison. Of these, almost 13,000 died from disease, poor sanitation, malnutrition, overcrowding, and exposure to the elements. **His son James' obituary says he died at Andersonville but his wife Rebecca's obit states he was killed in front of Petersburg. This needs to be resolved** Rebecca received a widow's pension and raised their family, living until 1908. The previous generation has not yet been found, but there is a well-documented Kennedy four years older than James in Slippery Rock Township. Hopefully he was James' brother. * * * * * |
