Overview

Dorothea, or Dora as she was usually called, was born in New York to Frederick Boersch, a German Lutheran tailor, and his wife Maria. Before Dora was 10, her father married Elizabeth Colse (?). [The evidence that Maria was Dora's mother is circumstantial - Frederick and Maria were together in the 1850 census shortly before Dora was born. There is also the possibility that Dora was Elizabeth's daughter before she married Friedrich.] The family moved to Upper Canada (now Ontario) about 1856. Dora's parents lived the rest of their lives there but Dora married Henry Stoll, a German, and they immigrated to Cleveland in 1877. Dora was the mother of six children who all survived to adulthood.
