George Thomas Gostick

Carrie Gostick, beloved wife of George Gostick and mother of Bernice Ellor and husband Clive. She died peacefully at the Luther Home, her residence of many years.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 25 at 10:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St at Luxton Ave., with Pastor Paul Steeves officiating. Interment will follow at Glen Eden memorial Gardens.
Carrie was born in Sheffield, England, December 30, 1894, but spent most of her long life in Canada.
Other survivors are granddaughters, Candy, Morna, Margot and Nan; as well as five great-grandchildren, Darcy, Cara, Julia, Heidi and Ian.
She will long be remembered for her care and love of her family, and her cheerful acceptance of her disability.
In lieu of floral tributes, donations may be made to the Luther Home, to whom the family are very grateful for their attention and concern over the many years of her stay there.¹¹

GEORGE THOMAS GOSTICK
1892 - 1993
On March 16, 1993, George Thomas Gostick passed over into his new life.
He is survived by his only child Bernice Ellor (husband Clive); granddaughters, Candy Chihonik, Morna Wake (husband Grant), Margot McKenzie (husband Rob), Nan Wojcikowski and great-grandchildren, Darcy Chihonik, Cara and Heidi Wojcikowski, Julia and Ian Wake.
George was born July 29, 1892 in London, England, eldest of three boys. Leaving school at 14 he was apprenticed in carpentry, finishing as a master carpenter. The family immigrated to Canada, settling in Winnipeg in 1910.
During the First World War he was wounded and returned to England where the army trained him as a remedial therapist assigned to the rehabilitation of injured personnel.
On his return to civilian life he eventually was employed by the Winnipeg School Division, first as a manual training teacher using the skills he had acquired in carpentry, then as a physical training instructor utilizing his army experience.
Finally, realizing that his education was incomplete he studied at night school to qualify himself for teaching at the Junior High level. With much determination he succeeded and spent 42 years in this capacity at Lord Selkirk School in Elmwood. In addition to academics he taught music (he was an accomplished vocalist) and sports. Speed skaters may remember chilly outdoor meets and his soccer teams were very active. Many male students actually found themselves enjoying music, singing sea chanties and other similar material deliberately chosen to foster their interest.
All in all, generations of Elmwood children passed through his hands. A firm but just disciplinarian, he was respected and fondly regarded by his pupils, many of whom kept in touch over the years and over the miles.
George was married for 60 years to another English immigrant, Carrie McIlvride. Their union produced the one child Bernice. Unfortunately Carrie's last 12 years were spent in a wheelchair, the result of a fall. George was in daily attendance at her nursing home. She died at age 91.
Until his last few months he was living, relatively independently, in his own comfortable apartment, in spite of poor eyesight and hearing difficulties. However, his mental capacity was unimpaired and he took a keen interest in everything going on around him. A large collection of classical tapes was a great comfort to him and a good intellectual discussion was always a great pleasure. His family was of paramount importance to him as he was to them.
His 100th Birthday "Bash", attended by a large number of friends, former colleagues, relatives and former Lord Selkirk pupils was thoroughly enjoyed by him.
Unlike many of advanced age, this wonderful man still preferred to look ahead, leaving nostalgia for the odd quiet moment here and there.
To us his presence was vital. He will long be a part of our lives.
Fneral service will be held on Saturday March 20 at 10:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. at Luxton Ave., with Rev Murray Pippy officiating. Interment will follow at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens.
